ABLE SEAMAN / LIFEBOATMAN

Our course consists of three days of classroom work with the fourth day allotted for testing at the Coast Guard Regional Examination Center. Upon successfully completing the final examinations at the REC, students will receive one of the following Merchant Mariner Documents (type depending on applicant qualifications):

  • Able Seaman Unlimited (lifeboatman included)
  • Able Seaman Limited (lifeboatman included)
  • Able Seaman Special (lifeboatman included)
  • Lifeboatman
  • Able Seaman Special - Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV)
  • Able Seaman - Mobile Offshore Units (MOU)
  • Lifeboatman - Mobile Offshore Units (MOU)


Students are prepared for the examination by our instructors using a lecture-method style of teaching. Classroom training covers Rules of the Road (lights, shapes & sound signals), firefighting, survival techniques, aids-to-navigation, CPR/First Aid, lifeboat launching, davits, life rafts, survival crafts, seamanship & knot-tying (if needed). This course is cur­rently under development for Coast Guard Approval.
